The initial investment in Tunnel Hill Partners was the Tunnel Hill Reclamation (THR) Landfill site, a 2,200 acre rail-served Subtitle D landfill located near New Lexington, Ohio. The THR landfill has over 150 million tons of permittable capacity and is currently permitted to accept up to 8,000 tons per day.
After the initial landfill asset, THP has grown through acquisition into a fully integrated waste management company. In 2012, THP extended its reach in the northeast by acquiring the New York assets of Coastal Distribution, an operator of two rail waste transfer facilities, servicing the New York Metro market. In 2013, THP closed on the final piece of the Coastal asset portfolio, by completing the acquisition of Coastal Distribution of Paterson in Northern New Jersey. These facilities were quite complementary to the THR landfill site, providing consistent material volumes to the landfill. Also in 2013, THP completed the acquisition of Hazleton Creek Properties which operated the largest and only rail served Beneficial Use site in Pennsylvania. This facility serves a new vertical for THP by providing beneficial use capacity for non-hazardous soil and other materials related to the construction and redevelopment markets in PA, NJ, CT and NY.
2014 was a very busy year for THP with the opening of an entirely new facility called Environmental Transload Services (“ETS”), located at the Oak Point rail yard in the Bronx, New York. The site serves as a intermodal rail transload facility for containerized materials from transfer stations in and around New York City with ultimate disposal at the THR landfill. In late 2014, the company took the next step in its geographic expansion by acquiring the Boston area assets of WCA. The Champion City Recovery Transfer Station and the Stoughton Recycling Technologies Recycling Facility represent significant plays in the Boston market for both C & D materials as well as recyclable commodities. This major acquisition also included the Sunny Farms Landfill in Fostoria, OH thus making THP the owner and operator of two of the largest and most capable rail served landfills in the country.
Most recently, on June 3, 2016, THP completed a merger with the CT and Somers, NY assets of City Carting. These assets included four transfer stations and one material recovery facility along with management contracts for five municipal transfer stations. City’s service offerings include collection, hauling and transfer operations of municipal solid waste, C&D debris, contaminated soils and recyclables for commercial, industrial, residential and municipal customers throughout NY and CT. The combined companies represent a significant opportunity to expand THP’s service offerings to a wide customer base in attractive, dense and affluent markets. In 2015, the City Carting operations generated in excess of $110 million in revenue and managed just under 1 Million tons of waste which will now be internalized under THP.
We believe experience is the key to our quality services, and our Tunnel Hill Partners Management team has over 150 years combined experience in the waste management industry. Going forward, THP looks to grow its operation both organically and through strategic acquisition to continue as a leader in the waste-by-rail business.
